Round table: Still Beautiful
In the “Still Beautiful” project, two states overlap: the moving image, linear in time, and the still, mounted on a surface. As the successor to a still photograph, the still becomes the main actor in a space installation that features this special category of image. Bit players such as structures, space solutions and almost unnoticeable residual scenes become visible. But not every video frame is a suitable still: the beauty of a movement can turn trivial, while distortions provide a perfect composition. The moment when beauty turns into ugliness and vice versa rarely reveals itself as clearly as in the search for the right still. Combined into a collage, video stills can also tell an utterly different story than they do in their fixed positions in the video flow. For example as an image atlas, wallpaper, projection, or object: still beautiful.
