Danila Tkachenko: Restricted Areas
“Danila Tkachenko: Restricted Areas”
4 Nov. 2016–31 Jan. 2017
In the winters of 2013/14 and 2014/15, photographer Danila Tkachenko traveled several states of the former Soviet Union in search of abandoned and derelict industrial structures.
The resulting works stage the relics as abstract objects on a stage created by light and weather conditions: a tropospheric antenna, a vertical take-off amphibious aircraft …
This is the first time the world-acclaimed series “Restricted Areas” is shown in Austria. It won last yearʼs edition of the “European Publishers Award for Photography,” which included the book release of the series by five European publishing houses. In the book, the artist had an excerpt of H.G. Wellsʼs “The Time Machine” precede the photographs. But unlike the time traveler from the novel, the artist visited a bygone future and thus visualizes the end that lies in every progress.
